Coaches and athletes including rugby player Ian McGeechan, footballer Hope Powell, basketball player Stefanie Collins, rugby player Ryan Jones and cyclist Nicole Cooke, give advice on what makes a good team leader and how to manage a team effectively.
This clip could be used to inspire, motivate and generate interest for students studying sport.
Following the clip, students could work in groups to discuss the following: What makes a good coach? What makes a good team manager? Do/should these qualities differ depending on the sport? What are the key roles of a head coach/manager? How can an effective leader turn things around for a sports team or athlete? Can you think of any examples where this has been the case? How can a sports leader stamp her/his authority on a group of talented athletes and maintain respect?
