Beginning with a quotation from the Qur'an about Mecca as the first house of worship, we see pilgrims arriving in Mecca and wearing their ihram clothes. The purpose of ihram (purity, unity and equality) is explained as well as the expectations while in ihram (peace, humility and patience). The pilgrim's prayer, the Talbiyah, is explained and the Kaaba in the Masjid Al-Haram is shown.

Could be used to introduce a mystery exercise to answer the question "Why is Hajj so important to Muslims?". Create a card sort with ideas giving the religious quotation, personal reasons and those regarding being part of the Ummah and Ihram. Include some red herrings to increase the challenge. Students should be asked to rank the cards in order of importance and to use the information to produce a final answer to the question.
