Student should create a character web that sums up the relationships of characters and their actions to each other. They should consider the different images characters portray and how much they keep hidden. Encourage them to find key quotes in the text that help summarises who a character is in terms of their moral code and life perspective. For example, what does the following line suggest about Nick? “Simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.” Ask students to consider their personal interpretations of each character and write a short essay showing their understanding.
