Polestar, one of Europe’s largest commercial printers, produce over 30,000 magazines per hour. Customers provide them with a digital page layout for a magazine and their job is to turn this into the finished product, ready for distribution and sale. Polestar use a gravure printing press with 4 printing units, one for each of the CMYK colours (cyan, magenta, yellow and key black).
This can be used to illustrate how magazines are printed, from the final artwork to the end product. Students could be encouraged to use their note-taking skills to record the various stages of the printing process.
This could form an addition to a graphics project for any commercial product, such as a greeting card or children's book design.
