A mouse named Jacques lives in the city and is missing the love of his life, Lucille, who lives in the countryside. Jacques decides to visit her, but when he gets there the countryside isn't what he expected, so they both go back to the city. However, things don't run as smoothly as expected for them and Lucille ends up being caught by a cat. They then decide to compromise and move. This fable is also known as 'The Town Rat and the Country Rat'.
This clip could be used to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of living in the countryside and the city (from the point of view of a mouse if appropriate!). Students could choose the town or countryside and draw and label a landscape in either place, adding Jacques and Lucille into the picture, including the benefits and hazards for a mouse. For example, cows with cow poo for the countryside or cars and humans in the city.
Note: an English version of this story is available with the title 'The Town Rat and the Country Rat' (animation).
