We follow the story of a young offender called Adam, who has been charged with robbery and appears before District Judge David Simpson in a youth court. Adam and his mother are played by actors but all the court personnel are real professionals. The judge questions the them and must make a decision whether to give a Referral Order (a community sentence) or to adjourn the court for reports with a view to passing a custodial sentence.

The class could discuss: "What is the difference between being arrested and being charged with an offence? How does the interviewing police officer use evidence during the interview and what are the advantages of this approach? What are the factors affecting Adam's likelihood of offending?"
