The First Past the Post voting system is used for elections to the House of Commons.

This could be used as a stimulus for discussion of advantages and disadvantages of the Single Transferable Vote. To further illustrate voting systems, the teacher could lead ‘X Factor’ simulations on bands/pop stars. 'Most popular' votes could be counted using the First Past The Post system and again with Proportional Representation to compare and contrast the results. Students could then be asked to complete an extended written response on the advantages and disadvantages of First Past the Post.
