Using contempory footage and commentary from Henry Metelmann, a working class boy, the rise of the Hitler Youth movement is outlined and the reasons why it was an important form of control for the Nazis is explored. Some of the concerns that older generations had about the ability of the Nazis to influence the young are highlighted, as are reasons why it was so appealing to youngsters like Henry.
Students could list the advantages of the Hitler Youth to young people. Students could list the many methods the Nazis used to appeal to young people. There is also scope to discuss why the Hitler Youth Movement would have been particularly appealing to working class boys like Henry. Compare the Hitler Youth with the League of German Maidens. What are their differences and similarities? How do students feel about this gender split?
