Understanding the construction and interpretation of pictograms. Gordon the Crow is in charge of the bird table. One day he runs out of nuts. The stock is low and he cannot work out what is needed for the flock. Samuel, the wise old owl, helps by constructing a pictogram. Gordon can then see exactly how many nuts, seeds and worms he needs. On another occasion, a pictogram is created where each picture represents two birds. Reading and interpreting the data is clearly explained. The captivating language helps to reinforce the mathematical concepts and vocabulary associated with data handling and pictograms.
Introduce the term 'pictogram' and get the children to define what it means and draw out what it looks like. Listen out for the vocabulary the children are using. With data on birds in the local area, get the children to create a large pictogram on the playground, selecting their own symbols eg sticks from the outside to represent each bird. (If your school has a nature area, prior to this activity a group of children could have collected the data which the children could use). Show the clip to explain how a pictogram can be represented and how will it be different and similar to the one they are going to create. After the children have created their graphs, the children can then interpret them.
