Our ability to sense the temperature of the world around us helps us to regulate our own body temperature too, by sweating to cool down or shivering to warm up.

Could be used to introduce a discussion about different textures. You could present pupils with a selection of items to touch and then describe. You could list all the words they use, such as ‘soft’, ‘rough’, ‘smooth’ and ‘slimy’. Pupils could go on to test their sense of touch. Can they accurately identify objects made of different materials that are all hidden inside a bag? They can put a hand into the bag to feel the objects, but must not look inside.
