Ask the class: "What does the value of each digit have in 342?" Explain through partitioning, a range of strategies and apparatus. What different two-digit and three-digit numbers can you making using the digits 3, 4, 2? Which is greater, which is smaller and by how much? Following on from the hotel in the clip, can the children write the different numbers which could be on the doors made from the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, for the numbers 200-400, using the minimum of digits? eg 213, 231, 321, 312. A safe has a combination lock of four digits. It uses the digits 3, 4, 5, 2. What are the different combinations there could be? The different combinations can be assessed based on whether they are systematic and if trial and error is used. Further clues could be given to assist pupils eg the tens digit is greater than 3.
