Barnaby Bear is standing on the top of Arthur's Seat, the highest hill in Edinburgh. He meets a guide called Sarah and learns that the hill he is standing on and all the rocks he can see around Edinburgh were created by volcanoes 350 million years ago. Edinburgh Castle sits on part of the volcano, which is now extinct.
This clip is useful as an introduction to volcanoes and how hills are formed. The children could locate Edinburgh on a map of the UK. They could locate any extinct volcanoes within the local county. This could lead onto finding out the location of the nearest active volcano and creating a small information sheet. The children could make model volcanoes and using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, they could make them erupt!
