Three children collect parsnip seeds from a plant grown last year on their allotment. They prepare the soil, plant and water them, explaining why this is important. They dig up a parsnip and prepare it for eating. Then they visit an enormous farm in Norfolk where they see radishes grown, harvested and prepared while the farmer explains the processes involved.
This clip could be used at the beginning of a lesson to identify the ideal conditions required for plant growth. It could be a discussion starter when considering the types of seeds to plant with your class and would also be beneficial to use before a seed collection and sorting lesson. Links could be made to Literacy with ‘Jack and The Beanstalk' and 'The Enormous Turnip’. Seeds such as beansprouts or runner beans could be planted on blotting paper or in jars so that the pupils can observe and record the germination process on a daily basis, perhaps also using some time lapse photography. The farmer's narrative in the latter part of the clip would be a good resource for reinforcing the main features of seed growth and could offer the possibility of some collaborative, sequenced information writing. Pupils can be given, or make, a comic book style strip of frames in which they will draw each step the children took when trying to grow the seeds or the radishes. They can then be asked to explain their picture to the class. This is also an opportunity for paired or grouped activity.
