Despite early successes, Robert the Bruce's forces were slaughtered at Methven. His wife, daughter and sisters were captured soon afterwards and handed over to Edward I. His brother was executed. Bruce fled into exile while he considered his options and chose to fight on.
Students can pretend that they are designing the cover for a collection of stories written by Sir Walter Scott and including tales about Robert the Bruce. What image will they include on the front cover and how will they sell the stories in the blurb? Students could also write a foreword for the book, summarising the historical facts as opposed to Scott's fictional account.
