An introduction to the glamorous city of Rio de Janeiro. Rio is the second largest city in Brazil and is located in a spectacular natural setting of mountains, forests and beaches. However, Rio is a city of strong contrasts between the rich and the poor. One third of people live in districts of self-built homes called favelas.

Students could define the term 'favela' and discuss the reasons why they exist. Split the class into pairs. The pupils could write a 'day in the life' account, one of a young person living in a favela, another of a young person living in a more affluent part of Rio.
