Discussion of the greenhouse effect and the importance of maintaining a balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The main gases in the atmosphere that contribute to the greenhouse effect are carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour. The increase in man-made emissions of carbon dioxide is of most concern to scientists. Deforestation has reduced the number of plants removing carbon dioxide from the air through photosynthesis.

This clip can be used as an introduction to a project or homework task on global warming. Students can identify areas of the world or countries which are adding to carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and how they are doing it. They can then write letters to the leaders of those countries with suggested solutions and benefits which would accrue from changed habits as well as scenarios of what would happen if current habits are not changed.
