The views of a Glasgow doctor on the living conditions of the Irish immigrant population are heard in this audio extract.

First broadcast:
4 March 2004

The clip could be used to provide evidence of the squalid conditions many Irish immigrants lived in. Investigate how typical the conditions described were. Ask students if they are representative of housing across Scotland or just Glasgow? Were conditions for Scottish working classes significantly different? The class could explore the relationship between immigration and the rapid growth of Scottish cities, particularly the growth of slums.
