An illustration of what happens when a 999 call is made. The eight police forces in Scotland are shown and the different roles that the police play is discussed. The main roles of the police are to protect lives and property, to prevent and detect crime and to preserve order.

Give students a fictitious situation where a crime is being committed. Ask them what they would do to notify the police. Each pair can role-play a police control room operator receiving a 999 call and a member of the public reporting a crime so pupils know the sorts of questions they may be asked.
