A look at the early history of coal mining or extraction in the Blaenavon area, showing early outcrop mining and work on coal races. As industrialisation commenced, technological development led to the building of bell pits and an expansion into drift mines.

In four groups, pupils could focus on one method of extracting coal and create a diagram labelled with keywords and brief description in order to show their understanding of the different methods in use. They could then discuss the dangers that the coal miners faced with each mining technique and form a class consensus, highlighting the most difficult and dangerous method of coal extraction.
