Foods such as meat, eggs, milk, soya and nuts are given as examples of those high in protein. Protein is described as being used to make new cells and repair damaged ones. It is also described as being needed to make enzymes for digesting food and antibodies to fight infection. The break down of protein during digestion and absorption into blood is mentioned.
Proteins should be looked at in terms of the part they play in essential body processes, and how their composition makes this so. Students could make models of amino acids to chain together, and relate this to the growth and repair of body tissues.
