The beginnings of a Welsh Language Society (Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg) protest campaign in the 1970s to secure the future of Welsh language TV broadcasting, and thus hopefully the future of the language itself, by setting up a Welsh language channel. The campaign finally succeeded in 1982 with the launch of S4C.
Students could investigate why people were prepared to protest in favour of a Welsh language television channel. Pupils could be asked to look into the nature of the protests and consider how Wales would look without S4C. Students could be asked if they would protest for a Welsh language channel nowadays.
