Polestar, one of Europe’s largest commercial printers, produce over 30,000 magazines per hour. Customers provide them with a digital page layout for a magazine and their job is to turn this into the finished product, ready for distribution and sale. Polestar use a gravure printing press with 4 printing units, one for each of the CMYK colours (cyan, magenta, yellow and key black).

This could be used as an example of industrial manufacture, showing clearly and graphically each stage of the printing process. Efficient production and the importance of minimum waste can be highlighted. The whole process is described from the final digital image to hard copy.
Students could be asked to produce a flowchart showing every stage of the gravure printing process, including quality control.
This could be used as an addition to a graphics project for any commercial product.
