Even at primary school level, Chinese students are under great pressure to perform well academically. However, primary schools are also trying very hard to produce balanced and well-rounded young people. Therefore, they provide after-school activities on Friday afternoons to encourage students to take part in hobbies such as traditional martial arts, Beijing Opera, and singing folk songs.

Use this clip to introduce vocabulary for hobbies. Students could match pictures of people taking part in these hobbies with the word in Mandarin. They could then use this vocabulary to describe their favourite hobbies to the class.
Students could also learn a Mandarin song or watch examples of the style of opera being taught in the school.
