Adrian Lester visits a crypt with the students playing Romeo and Juliet in William Shakespeare's play. He encourages the students to draw on how they feel in this location while on stage. He discusses central themes of death and darkness and puts dialogue from the scene into context with reference to the feud between the Montagues and Capulets and how Romeo would feel in the Capulets' tomb.
Ask students to note down any strong childhood memories they have (and as much as they can remember of the five senses). Discuss how our memory transports us back to an emotion. Explore Stanislavski's theory of emotion memory with the students and choose any emotion from the whole play and encourage students to remember a time they felt it. Note down the memory, the emotion and to whom it relates in 'Romeo and Juliet'. Ask students to choose a line from the text for their emotion and rehearse trying to evoke the feeling. Discuss how this idea is used in the clip to evoke a sense of place, and how easy this is to do.
