Jimmy visits a farm as they harvest their broccoli. He discovers that speed in doing this is essential in increasing the shelf-life of the broccoli and ensuring the consumer gets the produce at its best. Once harvested the broccoli has a four day shelf-life so the quicker it is chilled the fresher it will be.
Could be used to launch an investigation of the ‘display until’ and ‘use by’ dates on a range of products. Learners might be prompted to find out why particular foods have a specific shelf life, and the impact (if any) of using foods after these dates. In order to do this the teacher may want to prepare case studies or data as learning resources to stimulate classroom discussion.
