In order for a car to run it needs petrol. Petrol is fuel for the car. People are more complex than cars. For the human body to function it needs many different types of fuel in the form of food. The human body needs food for energy, to keep warm, and for growth and repair. We need many nutrients on a daily basis in order to stay healthy. The three main nutrient groups in food are carbohydrates, protein and fats. We also need minerals and vitamins. A good balanced diet of fresh food helps to keep us healthy.

Could be used to reinforce a balanced diet. The children could sort a selection of foods on their tables in to the 3 main food groups - fats, protein and carbohydrates. On paper plates the children could draw what they ate for their lunch and then work out if their lunch was a balanced diet or not.
