While Mary Queen of Scots remained in France, her mother, Mary of Guise, governed in her place. This proved unpopular in Scotland because Mary of Guise was a foreigner, a woman and a Catholic. In opposition to her rule, a small band of Protestant noblemen formed a group called the ‘Lords of the Congregation’.

Students could pretend that they are Mary of Guise writing to the agony aunt of a magazine. What problems is she facing and what solutions could the agony aunt suggest?
