Find out about the Vikings, who lived in Britain over one thousand years ago. These Norse pirate raiders eventually settled in Britain but still explored and traveled widely to trade all around the world. Their language is the origin for some surprising words, towns and cities too. Do you live in one of them or have one near where you live?
Research where there is evidence of Viking invasion or trade. Use a world map to locate these and plot the possible routes they may have followed to and from Scandinavia. Similarly, using the information in the animation, plot towns and cities which are of possible Viking origin on a British map. Students could list words of Viking origin, before writing a short story involving as many of these as possible. Alternatively, pupils could write a description of what it may have been like to experience a Viking raid.
