Freedom is important to each of the characters in different ways. For the shipwrecked characters, their experience of disaster and isolation offers them a freedom to behave in ways that they wouldn’t consider in normal society. Soon after arriving on the island, Antonio and Sebastian plot to murder King Alonso in his sleep. Meanwhile, both Ariel and Caliban seek freedom from their servitude to Prospero, whereas Prospero himself wants freedom from the island, his past and his need for revenge.

Ask students to create a mind map of the word ‘freedom’ to include synonyms, examples of freedom in their own lives, examples of freedoms they wish they had. Then create similar maps for each of the characters. Which freedoms does each character have? Which freedom do they desire? How do we know?
