A director discusses how students become more interested in Shakespeare if they relate it to real-life situations. This is then demonstrated by a group of students who perform an alternative version of Act 1 Scene 4 from 'Romeo and Juliet' set in an aerobics class.
Ask students to pick out the sections of dialogue from the scene and write a modern version of the lines. Discuss the meaning of the lines. Choose a different scene from 'Romeo and Juliet' and allocate students key lines. Ask them to do the same exercise, creating an improvisation, that makes sense of their lines. Repeat the previous exercise, writing their own version of the lines. Read the actual scene and explore how their interpretation of the meaning, compares with Shakespeare's. Discuss what emotions are being presented with the key lines. Do they match the emotions from the actual scene?
