Make a short squash and stretch animation using just a camera, tablet and modelling clay. A modelling clay ball is used as the subject for this short animation. As it bounces it appears to squash, stretch and change in shape. Each movement is created using stop frame animation and by reshaping the ball slightly before each frame is taken. Using free online animation software the frames are run in sequence to create the illusion of movement.
With minimal editing skills this animation is an easily accessible activity and could be varied to create an infinite number of objects, characters and shapes on any topic. Children could start by manipulating simple modelling clay shapes on a flat surface. Encourage children to make shapes spread, shrink, squash, stretch and disappear.
