How to help build excitement for school

This article was last updated on 21 August 2020

Early years professional Jamel has helped hundreds of children to make the transition from home or nursery to primary school. Here are his top tips for helping your child to get excited about starting school.

Jamel's tips

  • Before term starts, walk or travel to the primary school with your child to help build familiarity.
  • Pack their school bag together and let them try on their uniform.
  • Keep talking about school and how it is fun and exciting - you could share some photos of your own school days, or read a book about school.
  • Use imaginative play and pretend you are in school at home - try arts and crafts, playing with toys and other things that they might do at primary school.
