I was glad to leave school, but returning as an adult changed my life

“I always felt that I could do more, I just didn’t know what to do or how to do it.”

Mark didn’t enjoy school and felt that his first job wasn't challenging enough. He found learning as an adult much more enjoyable, as he had chosen to be there and it helped get him the new job he wanted.

After leaving school Mark decided to start working as an estate officer rather than completing sixth form. He did the job for 12 years and enjoyed it, but when he felt he wasn't being challenged he decide on a career change.

One of his friends worked as a gas engineer and inspired him to complete the gas foundation course. Mark found training as an adult more rewarding as there was a clear goal.

He funded his studies by continuing to work mornings and then training in the afternoon.

Mark now feels he is achieving something worthwhile with his work. The pay is better, so he only needs to work Mondays to Fridays and loves being able to take his children on holiday.

“I feel like I’m achieving something, like I’m doing something worthwhile with my time. It’s nice to know I can look after my family."
