Add and subtract fractions within 1
We will start by remembering two skills we have used before:
A: Adding fractions with the same denominator
B: Finding equivalent fractions
Make sure you feel confident with these skills. We’re going to use them to find the solution to addition and subtraction problems where the fractions have different denominators.
Throughout these activities and the independent practice questions, if you want to draw your own diagrams to begin with, that is fine. The idea is that once you have worked with the diagrams a few times and become confident with the methods, you won’t need to draw the diagrams every time!
Add and subtract fractions within 1 - Part a
In this video we practise finding a common denominator using our knowledge of equivalent fractions. We use this skill to add two fractions with different denominators.
Add and subtract fractions within 1 - Part b
In this video we practise finding a common denominator using our knowledge of equivalent fractions.
We learn to subtract two fractions with different denominators. We will also think about why we have to use a common denominator to add or subtract fractions.
Add and subtract fractions worksheet 1
These activities help you develop a deep understanding of how to add and subtract fractions by using a common denominator.
For each question, remember to first think about which fraction you will convert and why.
Add and subtract fractions worksheet 2
These independent practice questions will help you to build your confidence and accuracy when adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators.
If you would like to try to find the solution to these questions without using the pictures, you can cover the right hand side of the page.
