Kaleidoscope - Lauren Bacall

Lauren Bacall (pictured in 1944) speaks to Michael Billington about her life as an actress. She talks candidly about her partnership on and offscreen with Humphrey Bogart, her early work for Howard Hawks and her difficult relationship with Hollywood. She also discusses her friendship with British sculptor Henry Moore.

Lauren Bacall, originally named Betty Joan Perske, was born in New York on 16 September 1924 to a family of German-Romanian descent. After her parents divorced, she adopted the surname Bacall, a translated form of her mother's birth name. Though professionally she eventually became Lauren, privately she still preferred friends to call her Betty.
