About Digital Cities: North East 2018

Digital Cities North East kicks off this October with an exciting and innovative week of free training and events for the creative industries in Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Gateshead.

If you work in the creative industries or are looking to join us, this is your opportunity to get clued-up on the latest in digital content and hands-on with new technology.

You can also get creative with an ambitious range of masterclasses and workshops delivered by the BBC Academy, RTS North East and the Border, Northern Film & Media, Teesside University, the University of Sunderland, BFI Network, BBC Writers Room, Innovate Now and PROTO: The Emerging Technology Centre.

Running across four cities and towns in the North East, all parts of the region are joining forces this year to provide a very special focus on nurturing new talent and creating an exciting future for the North East’s digital sector.

Join us on these dates, in these locations:

Monday 15 October: National Glass Centre, Sunderland

Tuesday 16 October: Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Wednesday 17 October: Teesside University and MIMA, Middlesbrough

Thursday 18 October: Teesside University and MIMA, Middlesbrough

Friday 19 October: hedgehog lab, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and PROTO, Gateshead

Throughout the week you can:

  • brush up on digital journalism and short-form storytelling skills
  • interact with the latest in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and 360 film
  • attend exclusive workshops on animation and gaming
  • get the inside track from the region’s biggest production teams
  • get to know some of the city’s thriving creative businesses.

In addition, BBC School Report is joining this year to offer school students and teachers the chance to boost their digital knowledge through tailored workshops and mentoring in Sunderland on Tuesday 16 October.

The week is a fantastic opportunity to bring together everyone working in digitally creative industries in the North East, to promote cross-sector collaboration, forge new partnerships and develop skills.
