In 2006 the 13th Eurovision Young Musicians Contest took place in Vienna, Austria organised by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation and Eurovision EBU.

Eighteen young musicians competed in the Semi-Finals on 7 and 8 May in the Konzerthaus in the centre of Vienna from which seven winners were selected to go forward to the Final.

In the final on Friday 13 May the seven finalists played eight minutes from a concerto with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under conductor Christian Arming. A jury then awarded three prizes of 5000, 3000 and 2000 Euros.

The winner of the 2002 Young Musician of the Year, Jennifer Pike, took part in the Eurovision contest playing
  • Mozart Sonata in G major KV301 mvt 1,
  • Debussy Sonata in G minor mvt 1
  • Kreisler Tambourin Chinois.
Jennifer's semi final performance impressed the judges and, in an announcement made at the Mozart House in Vienna, was awarded one of the seven places in the Final. This year the Final of Eurovision Young Musician was also the opening night of the prestigious Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival) and took place on an open air stage in the Rathausplatz in front of crowds of 30,000 people. Jennifer played Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3 KV216 2nd mvt.

The winner of the 2006 competition was Swedish cellist, Andreas Brantelid The competition is held every two years, with some countries (like the UK) holding national heats. Since its foundation in 1982 the Eurovision competition has become one of the most important music competitions on an international level and since 1985 a dance competition has been run along the same lines, with finals on alternating years from the music competition.
