While still at school the headmaster Major W G Bye was made co of the local home guard . He had many world war veterans volunteered to join. In order to get them trained he made the school OTC corporals and lance corporals to undertake the retraining of these old soldiers. So there was I still at school training World War One veterans how to fight a war!!! a unique and strange situation.
