TV Sitcom

The standard length for a sitcom is 30 minutes, in which to tell a self-contained story.

Examples of sitcoms include The Office, Gavin and Stacey, Pulling, Absolutely Fabulous, Extras, The Mighty Boosh, The Smoking Room, My Hero, My Family, After You've Gone, The Worst Week of My Life, Nighty Night, Not Going Out, The Green Green Grass, and Lead Balloon.

Writersroom does not accept material, ideas or scripts for sketch shows.

Submitting TV narrative comedy to writersroom

What to send:

  • A brief covering letter - who you are, the idea in a couple of lines, the format (sitcom, comedy-drama etc), and your writing experience
  • A full episode script, with a title page including your contact details and numbered pages throughout
  • An outline of how you see the series developing

 


What not to send:

  • An entire series — send one episode only
  • Multiple copies of scripts to different BBC departments - they will only end up back with BBC writersroom
  • An episode for an existing series
