Script Smart is a set of Microsoft Word templates to help writers format their scripts.
Script Smart is a free formatting tool. Due to limited resources, BBC writersroom are unable to provide technical support.
You do not need to use Script Smart to submit your script to the BBC.
As long as your script is laid out in a standard script format, BBC writersroom will consider it.
Please read the BBC writersroom FAQ and our submission checklist for more information on the submissions process.
Other script-formatting software is widely available, including Final Draft, MovieMagic Screenwriter, Movie Outline and CeltX. Microsoft also have a screenplay template available for Word.
Troubleshooting
Problems with Script Smart are often due to an incompatibility between the version of Microsoft Word you have and the version of Script Smart you are trying to download.
• Microsoft Word 7/95 - Script Smart 97 or Script Smart Plus
• Microsoft Word 2000 - Script Smart Gold
• Microsoft Word 2001 (for Macs) - Script Smart Gold
You should also read the Script Smart Read Me document.
Macros
As a safety measure, Microsoft Word protects itself from viruses by temporarily disabling macros contained in files downloaded from an external source. Reset your macro security settings in the following way (you can always set them back later):
Script Smart Plus users (Word 7):
• In Word, select the TOOLS menu
• Click 'Options'
• Choose the 'General' tab
• Uncheck the 'Macro virus protection' box
Script Smart Gold users (Word 2000):
• In Word, select the TOOLS menu
• Click 'Options'
• Set macro security settings to 'Medium' or 'Low'
Now try using the template again. If it still doesn't work, download it again from the website. This will usually rectify the situation. Note: Later versions of Word and/or Windows may require a different process to adjust the settings.
Virus Protection software settings (eg Norton Antivirus).
Sometimes, Word templates are scanned for viruses periodically, with fresh downloads disabled until the scanning has taken place. In this case, you should run the virus-scanning operation manually. You may need to contact your computer support organisation or the manufacturer for advice. Be sure to note down any on-screen messages you receive when trying to install or use the template.
DISCLAIMER:
Script Smart templates are supplied as a free accessory for writers.
Use of the templates is not a prerequisite for the assessment of any submissions made to the BBC.
Script Smart is a fully tested and virus-scanned template supplied on an "as is" basis and users download it at their own risk - the BBC cannot take responsibility for any problems you may encounter with your computer.
