BBC Radio Drama North are looking for talented writers based in the North of England, with compelling stories to tell.
The Alfred Bradley Bursary Award, run in partnership with Radio Drama North and the BBC writersroom, aims to encourage and develop new writing in the North. It is an amazing and unique opportunity where you could win a bursary of £5000, have your work produced on BBC Radio 4, secure a twelve month mentorship with a Radio Drama Producer and have the opportunity to develop future commissions.
What is The Alfred Bradley Bursary Award?
This biennial award was set up to commemorate the life and work of Alfred Bradley, the distinguished BBC Radio Drama Producer. Previous winners include Lee Hall, Rosemary Kay, Peter Straughan and Chris Wilson.
Who can apply?
The award is only open to people who live in the North of England and who have not had a previous network radio drama commission.
Who decides?
Rachel Dixon, Alfred Bradley’s Daughter
Chris Reason – Sony Gold Award Winning Writer
Cherylee Houston – Actress and Writer
Jeremy Howe – BBC Commissioning Editor for Drama, Radio 4
Kate Rowland – BBC Creative Director, New Writing
Sue Roberts – BBC Executive Producer, Radio Drama North
How do I enter?
You need to submit a full length script in any format alongside a separate one-page radio drama proposal suitable for the Radio 4 afternoon play slot.
The proposal should be an entirely separate idea to your submitted script. In essence, it should be the story outline of a drama which you would like to write, and should preferably include a story breakdown, a section on the style you wish to write the drama in and how you will utilise the audio medium.
Entrants will be judged on both elements and the judges will be particularly interested in the quality of the entrant’s writing.
Your name should not appear anywhere on your script or proposal. Instead, all entries must be accompanied by an entry form - download an entry form.
Entries should be posted with a completed entry form to:
Alfred Bradley Bursary Award
BBC Writersroom,

Brock House
19 Langham Street

Please read the full entry terms and conditions and the award FAQs before entering.
The closing date for entries is 10am on Thursday 15th September 2011.
