Exciting new opportunity for Scottish Writers to write for BBC Scotland Drama.
BBC Scotland Drama in conjunction with BBC writersroom and Creative Scotland would like to announce the launch of The Frank Deasy Award 2012-13.
The Award was set up in honour of the award-winning television dramatist Frank Deasy, who was renowned for his intelligent, authentic scripts, having created some on the most compelling characters on TV. Frank was born in Dublin and relocated to Glasgow, where he died in 2009, having "liked it so much he never came home".
The Frank Deasy Award is an exciting opportunity for original writers. We want to encourage Scottish writers who feel passionate about the stories they want to tell, and who have something to offer audiences across the length and breadth of the UK.
The award winner(s) will be offered the position of Writer in Residence at BBC Scotland for a period of 6 months. Their remit will be to develop original ideas for BBC1 with the aim of getting one of their pieces commissioned as a script on the BBC Scotland Drama development slate.
What we're looking for
Writers are at the heart of all great drama. We are looking for writers who wish to immerse themselves in the development of big mainstream TV dramas for the BBC. The award will consist of an initial payment of £5,000 and the support, time and advice of the development team to develop original ideas, 2 of which will be commissioned as treatments, for an additional fee, under the standard BBC terms and conditions.
Who can apply
The award is open to Scottish writers or writers living in Scotland with at least one professional commission or engagement in TV, theatre, radio or film. This opportunity is not open to writers who have previously created a network TV drama of 60 minutes or more in length. The residency is aimed at working writers who now wish to develop and write an original British drama series or serial for BBC1.
How to enter
We invite writers to submit an original script sample (TV, theatre, radio, film) and an outline of no more than 2-pages for an original TV drama series or serial idea and a brief biog of work to date.
The submission dates are from November 30th 2012 to February 1st 2013.
All entries must be accompanied by a completed application form - Download the application form.
