Nepal: creating dialogue and debate

Nepal

Panel with Nepalese Prime Minister GP Koirala in his home town of Biratnagar

'Sajha Sawal' ('Common Questions'), a weekly radio political debate programme, creates dialogue between those in power, and communities that have traditionally been excluded, including rural communities and women.

A live studio audience asks questions and raises concerns with politicians on the panel.

"In my village, women are being regularly raped. Will a solution for violence against women have to wait until the elections for the Constituent Assembly?"

'Sajha Sawal' was launched in November 2007. The Nepalese Prime Minister, GP Koiral, participated in the first panel discussion.

Recorded in front of an audience of secondary school students and people from rural communities in Eastern Nepal, the audience raised their concerns with the Prime Minister for over an hour.

"In my village, women are being regularly raped. Will a solution for violence against women have to wait until the elections for the Constituent Assembly?"
Fulsari Choudary.

It was the first time the Prime Minister had taken questions directly from Nepalese citizens on the radio (or television).

Pre-recorded questions and comments gathered from community groups across Nepal were also played for the Prime Minister's reaction.

The programme is recorded for radio and television, and is broadcast nationwide on over 100FM stations and on a commercial TV channel.
