Angola HIV campaign: research and impact

Angola

Researchers getting ready for the field

Our research team in Angola carried out a survey of 15-24 year olds in four provinces across the country in early 2006 to establish the reach and impact of Mo Kamba and our public service announcements.

The purpose of the survey was to establish:

  • The awareness, reach and appeal of Mo Kamba and a selection of the PSAs among the target audience
  • Levels of knowledge, attitudes held and self-reported behaviour relating to issues directly relevant to reducing the risk of HIV and AIDS
  • Variations in knowledge, attitudes and self-reported behaviour across people with different levels of exposure to Mo Kamba
  • 54% of radio listeners have heard one or more of our public service announcements
  • By December 2006, 36% of radio listeners in Angola were aware of Mo Kamba
  • 64% of people who had heard of Mo Kamba were regular listeners
  • 90% percent of Mo Kamba listeners disagreed that buying condoms was immoral, while only 81% of non-listeners disagreed
  • 67% of Mo Kamba listeners were willing to take an HIV and AIDS test, while only 60% of non-listeners were willing to be tested
