In August 2005, we began working in partnership with Radio Nacional de Angola to produce public service announcements (PSAs) about HIV and AIDS in eight languages.
Radio PSAs
The PSAs featured Angolan celebrities, such as pop stars and members of the national football team, talking about HIV and AIDS. We produced hundreds of radio PSAs over three years.
Reach
The PSAs were broadcast daily on a large network of radio stations including Radio Nacional de Angola's channels and 18 provincial stations. During peak periods the PSAs were broadcast more than 200 times a day across the network.
Twenty new radio PSAs about HIV testing, how the virus is transmitted, how to prevent infection and challenging the stigma of living with HIV and AIDS were produced in Portuguese.
Eight of these were re-versioned into six additional national languages to ensure messages effectively reach young Angolans across the country. They were broadcast by 23 radio stations throughout 2008.
Television PSAs
Five television PSAs were produced, and broadcast in collaboration with Angolan State Television. Each PSA was scripted to reflect the reality of Angolan life and its people, featuring easily identifiable characters from across the country.
These characters include a taxi driver, street traders, pregnant women, a village Soba (wise man/elder), and of course young people in general.
Throughout 2008, their faces and stories also featured in other media formats including radio PSAs and print advertising.
