Dr Gerry Power

Dr Gerry Power
Director of Research

Dr Power is responsible for audience research and evaluation for the BBC World Service Trust, overseeing projects in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Prior to joining the Trust, he directed strategic consulting and research teams for a global media research firm in New York and London focussing on a range of key issues in the broadcasting, digital and new media sectors.

Dr Power has conducted strategic research to inform policy and decision making at the most senior level of organizations throughout the world, including the United States Information Agency, the National Council for Science and Technology, the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Irish Industrial Development Authority.

He holds a PhD (Media Theory and Research) and an M.A. (Communication Management) from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California.


Angola

Cândido Mendes joined the BBC World Service Trust's Angolan office in April 2005.

Prior to joining the Trust, his work included a 12-month research project on political parties in Angola, commissioned by the Electoral Institute of Southern Africa (EISA) and the Swedish-based International Democratic Electoral Assistance (IDEA). He has also conducted a quantitative mine survey carried out across the country while working for the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) organisation.

Between early 2000 and late 2003, Mr Mendes operated a community technology centre in South Africa, which provided IT literacy classes, Internet services and a weekly newsletter to Angolans living in Cape Town.

Mr Mendes has also previously worked as a journalist for a weekly newspaper and has assisted with online editing and design.



Barnaby Smith

Barnaby has worked for the BBC World Service Trust since May 2006, specialising in qualitative research and working on a variety of projects across Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Cambodia.

Prior to joining the Trust, Barnaby worked within commercial market research for organisations such as MORI, where he specialised in qualitative research for a mixture of public and private sector clients. He has also worked for key audience research surveying groups within the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) field, as well as for Members of Parliament (UK) and Captains of Industry.

Barnaby holds a BA (Hons) in Politics from the University of Essex and an MA in European Politics (EU Public Policy) from the University of Leeds.

Sechele T. Sechele currently works as an independent media consultant in Botswana. He started out as a teacher and then moved into journalism 15 years ago. He spent ten of these years as editor of Mmegi magazine.

Dr Charles Esambe Alobwede recently completed a PhD at the University of Yaoundé, where he is a Lecturer in English Linguistics and English-French Comparative Studies.

Dr Alobwede is also Sub-Director and Senior Translator at the Ministry of Communication, Cameroon.

Dominique Mweze is a Professor at the Catholic University of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He specialises in Information Science and Communication studies, and his research in this area has been published extensively.

Professor Mweze has a PhD in Arts and Communication Science from the University of Liege, Belgium.

Dr Simon Gebremedhin is a Professor and Research Coordinator at Addis Ababa University in the School of Journalism and Communications.

He has produced several teaching and training materials covering English language education, communication and media topics. He has also conducted a number of training workshops for journalists and other media professionals in Ethiopia.

Dr Samuel Kafewo is a Senior Lecturer in the Theatre and Performing Arts Department of Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria.

Dr Kafewo is currently also a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Department of Music and Theatre Studies, University of Cape Coast, Ghana.

Dr Kafewo's research interests include citizenship, governance and democracy, health, HIV/AIDS, and the representation of women in television and films. His research has been published in a number of national and international journals.

Dr Jenkeri Zakari Okwori is an Associate Professor of Development Communication at the Faculty of Arts, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Nigeria.

From November 2004 - April 2005, Dr Okwori was a Fulbright African Senior Research Fellow at New York University. He has also worked on projects with the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, the Canadian International Development Agency, the World Bank Poverty Alleviation Development Committee, UNICEF, DfID, the British Council, and the Nigerian NGO Policy Development Committee.

Dr Ibrahima Seck

Dr Ibrahima Seck is an Assistant Professor in the History Department, Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dakar. He is also the incumbent Secretary General of the African Branch of the West African Research Association.

Dr Seck has received a number of fellowships from organisations, including WARA/WARC, USIS, CODESRIA and the Fulbright Foundation. He has also participated in media-related workshops and projects in the United States, and has given lectures at the University of New Orleans and the University of Mississippi.


Sierra Leone

David Tam-Baryoh is the Executive Director at the Centre for Media Education and Technology (C-MET), Sierra Leone.

Mr Tam-Baryoh is currently involved in a number of activities related to media development in Sierra Leone; he is the Consultant Editor of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy Paper, and a board member for West Africa Democracy Radio and for the Lawyers Centre for Legal Assistance. He also runs a community radio station in Freetown called 'Citizen FM'.

Mr Tam-Baryoh holds a Diploma in Journalism and a BA in Social & Political Philosophy. He is currently enrolled for an MA in Philosophy and a BSc in Science and Development studies at St Clements University, UK.

In 1999, Mr Tam-Baryoh won the WPR International Editor of the Year Award.

Jamal Abdi Ismail currently works as Audience Research Executive for the BBC World Service Trust's Somali 'Livestock Livelihood' project in Hargeisa.

Before joining the Trust, Mr Abdi Ismail worked as a Research Assistant for Farm Africa, and then as a correspondent for the East African Standard, the BBC Swahili service, the Pan African News Agency (PANA), and the Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN) organisation.

Mr Abdi Ismail has a diploma in Journalism from the Institute of Communication Studies and Development in Nairobi.

John Muthee Jones is the Country Head for the Steadman Group, Tanzania. This Group has been undertaking media monitoring and research over the past 11 years in Tanzania.

Mr Muthee Jones has previously been involved in various research projects in Tanzania, including the Tanzania All Media and Products Survey (TAMPS) and other qualitative research in both print and broadcast media.

Mr Muthee Jones has a BSc in Tourism Management obtained from Moi University, Kenya and an Advanced Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Nandera Mhando is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Her research interests cover advanced sociological theory, methods and techniques, urban social studies, medical anthropology and gender and population issues.
