Summary AMDI research report

AMDI logo on an outline of Africa
This study has provided new and substantial information about the current state of the media in 17 sub-Saharan African countries - a significant sample.

The overall picture is of a sector undergoing growth and transformation due to democratic reform and globalisation, accompanied by economic growth and the availability of new technologies.

Unfortunately, a lack of robust research to determine whether initiatives to strengthen African media have been effective has been a factor constraining private and public investment.

Still, there is strong support for a pan-African initiative that would compliment national interventions.

These potential benefits would include stronger lobbying of the international community and pan-African bodies; more sharing of lessons learnt; improved access to resources; reduced costs and an increase in better-focused funding.
