The BBC World Service Trust has won the 'Innovation of the Year' and 'One BBC' awards at the second BBC World Service Awards.
Michael Palin CBE, actor and writer, presented the awards on 12 March, at BAFTA in Central London. The BBC World Service Trust's Iran team picked up the 'Innovation of the Year' award for its 'ZigZag' project, an interactive virtual newsroom designed to enable aspiring Iranian journalists to generate high quality content. In addition, the team from 'Bangladesh Sanglap' (a ground breaking series of 'Question Time' - style debates) walked away with the 'One BBC' prize for its collaborative work on the 'Bangladesh by the River Project' (Nodipathey Bangladesh) with the BBC's Asia Pacific Region and English Networks News. Iran On behalf of 'ZigZag', Sina Motalebi, a new media specialist and Iran Country Director for BBC World Service Trust, collected the award and said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive this award. This accolade champions the work of 150 Iranian journalists who, under difficult conditions, have participated in our online journalism course and contributed to the ZigZag online website and radio show. I'm grateful for the Trust's support in enabling us to produce such a ground-breaking project. By granting us the freedom to be as innovative as possible, it has allowed us to deliver without compromising on creativity in reaching our goals."
Bangladesh On behalf of 'Bangladesh Sanglap', Michelle Ross-Stanton, Head of Factual Production, picked up the award and said: "For the BBC World Service Trust to succeed it must respond to the needs of its audiences. This project coincided with cyclone Sidr when the people of Bangladesh were in great need. Thank you to all our audiences in Bangladesh. This was very much a team effort involving the BBC at World Service and the BBC World Service Trust, this couldn’t have happened without such a team spirit." Recognition Stephen King, Director, BBC World Service Trust described the two awards as 'A great night for the Trust' adding: "These awards showcased our innovation and creativity and underlined how the work we do can make a positive difference to people's lives. "I'm delighted for 'ZigZagmag.com' and Bangladesh by the River. The work of the BBC World Service Trust is built on innovation, creativity and partnerships and both of these initiatives illustrate these qualities. 'Zigzagmag.com' illustrates a groundbreaking way of encouraging the development of citizen's media in Iran, a country where freedom of expression is severely challenged. "The Bangladesh Boat Trip shows an imaginative way of reaching populations and encouraging them to take part lively debates - the scale of both projects show how important partnerships with the BBC have been in increasing the scale and reach of the work."
