The Trust and World AIDS Day
The HIV pandemic remains one of the great global health crises. Across the Trust, HIV and AIDS projects illustrate the critical role communication plays in combating the disease. Our initiatives include: India: 'Jo Bola Wohi Sikander' (Those who talk are winners) The Trust is launching a mass media contest on the eve of World AIDS Day (1 December), to get people talking about sexual health in India. Radhrani Mitra, creative director of the campaign, talks about the objectives of the contest:
Africa: Teaching and HIV The Trust and BBC World Service explore how HIV and AIDS is threatening teaching in Africa. Angola: Against HIV and AIDS, we stand together In the week running up to World AIDS Day, the Trust will run 'Contra HIV e SIDA, Estamos Juntos' (Against HIV and AIDS, we stand together), a National HIV and AIDS multimedia campaign, the first of its kind in Angola.
In its 2006 survey of 2000 young radio listeners in Angola, the Trust measured awareness, reach and appeal of 'Mo Kamba' (My Mate), the Trust's call-in and discussion radio programme around sexual health for 15 to 24 year olds (accompanied by 160 radio public service announcements in eight lauguages): Kenya: Speaking out boldly The youth radio series Kimasomaso (‘To Speak Out Boldly’), has been relaunched in Kenya during 2007 on the BBC Swahili Service and its Kenyan broadcast partners. The programme provides a place for young people to explore a range of sexual health issues in discussion and audio diaries recorded by their peers and is accompanied by an evolving radio public service announcement campaign addressing HIV and AIDS.
Nigeria: STOP HIV campaign Two BBC World Service Trust radio programmes designed to rasie awareness about HIV and AIDS have won Nigerian Media Merit Awards. Cambodia: Living with HIV The Trust's campaign in Cambodia reaches the groups most at risk from HIV using TV and radio public service announcements, call-in programmes and films. 'My Journey' is the Trust-produced documentary film (shown in Cambodian cinemas during September) that follows Mony, Sophorn and Yom as they share their stories and the challenges of living with HIV in Cambodia. Vietnam: HIV prevention among youth The Trust is producing a mass-media HIV and AIDS campaign targeted at young people to encourage frank discussion about sexual health - as part of the Vietnamese government’s larger HIV Prevention Among Youth Project. This will include locally-produced television drama series (with the Vietnam Television Film Company), radio phone-in shows, public service advertisements and a range of print media. Previous World AIDS day Trust specials Last year, the Hindi women's community radio programme 'Aangan ke Paar', had HIV-positive couple: Raj Kumar and Shweta as guest presenters alongside the programme’s regular host, Rupa Jha. Together, they looked at issues around stigma, visited a Delhi orphanage for children affected by HIV, and also featured the Head of the Indian government’s National AIDS Control Organisation. | LOCAL LINKS India: watch the HIV competition advert 30 November, 2007 | Our Work in Asia World AIDS Day special: teaching and HIV27 November, 2007 | Our Work in Africa Nigerian HIV radio programmes win awards28 November, 2007 | News Tracking HIV and AIDS awareness in Angola17 September, 2007 | Research and Learning
