The Trust on World AIDS day
The Trust on World AIDS day
There are now some 40 million people around the world living with HIV and Aids. In 2005 alone there were over 3.1 million deaths from Aids-related illnesses and almost 5 million people became infected for the first time. *

The BBC World Service Trust is working around the globe with different media partners to convey vital messages designed to stem the spread of the disease and to improve the lives of those affected.

Read more below about our major HIV and Aids media campaigns around the world:

India
The Trust in India (Jasoos Vijay)

The BBC World Service Trust has been operating a high profile mass-media campaign on HIV and Aids since 2002, funded by DFID. The campaign takes advantage of the extensive reach of television in India and is run in partnership with the Indian National Aids Control Organisation and the state TV broadcaster, Doordarshan.

Cambodia

Loak Chuoy

Since 2003, the Trust has been working with the Royal Government of Cambodia and Cambodian broadcasters to produce a powerful combination of TV and radio programmes to try to prevent more people from becoming infected with HIV, and to improve care and support for those who are already affected.

Angola

The Trust in Angola

Increased population movement following the end of the 27 year civil war in Angola has provided a thriving environment for new HIV infections. The Trust's radio-based mass media campaign there focuses on changing behaviour to reduce prevalence.

Malawi

The Trust and FIFA in Malawi
The BBC World Service Trust and FIFA are using football to promote health and social responsibility within communities, and to promote football - not just as a game but as a vehicle for change. The Football Association of Malawi wants its national league to be at the forefront of the battle against HIV and Aids.

Nigeria
The Trust in Nigeria

In early 2005, the BBC Word Service Trust launched a major media project to respond to the epidemic. Funded by DFID, the project is carried out in partnership with the Nigerian Society for Family Health and over 30 Nigerian broadcasters. The project includes radio, television and video programmes designed specifically to appeal to youth.
